Re: Fingerprint Reader not working upon waking from sleep for windows login

This trial driver seems to have solved the issues on my W540 as well, and the FP reader is now working reliably.

I still have an issue that I was hoping this driver would solve: on my old W520 I could wake the computer with the FP Reader, and this was a very nice option, but this option is greyed out on the W540. Is it not possible to wake the W540 with the FP reader?

Thanks

Re: T440s doesn't wake up from sleep

Friends:

Issue: Unable to get out of sleep and unable to get monitor to work properly on dock.

I experienced same on my T440p.  Here is what worked for me:

Update bios.  Verify that startup memory is 512K within bios (hit F1 at startup and locate menu item under video)

Update Docking station driver.

Updated my external monitor driver.

Used a VGA cord from docking station (Pro 90W) and set default to VGA on my monitor.  Inconsitent results from other connectors otherwise.

Verified that my Windows operating system AND my installed drivers were consistent.  If your company, like mine, choose to remain with a Win 7 system, then it may get confusing.  My new T440p is labeled Win 8, so some folks may be doing harm with upgrades/updates.

These things were done with unknown results (they may have helped):

Updated fingerprint driver.  I am having no issues and use it daily.  I did turn off password protection when one would awaken the computer just to prevent an issue there.

Verified that I am using the correct power cable to my dock.  If you don't use the 90W adapter (for the 90W unit, for example) you will get odd outcomes.  Mine included not being able to have the monitor powered on while computer was on dock.

Set the monitor priority on the desktop, not just the FN-F7 hotkey.  With your montor hooked up and powered on, right click on the desktop, go to Grpahic options, output to, clone displays, Built-in + Digital.  Then the FN-F7, or just F7 depending upon if your FN lock key is on or off, works fine.  I was stupid, by the way...FN lock is toggled using Fn and Esc keys.  Old eyes.

Cheers.

Mike

T530i multiple external displays without dock

Hello all,

I'm having an issue trying to set up a T530i with Intel HD Graphics 400 with multiple external displays.  I have searched the forum and not found anything similar, it looks like most people are using docking stations with their configurations which I don't have.  Here is what I'm trying to set up.

External + External + Laptop

Currently, I am running a VGA splitter to the External displays.  This works as expected, replicating the display on both externals, as Windows only sees the connection as one external display.

My goal and endstate is to have the system recognize and operate as 3 seperate displays (extended desktop).

In my attempt to achieve this, I obtained a Mini Display Port to VGA converter, plugging one external display into each port (VGA and Mini Display port converted to VGA) the system now recognizes the a 3rd monitor, but it will not allow me to extend (or even activate it). I am only able to run 2 screens simultaneously.  Whenever I try to activate the 3rd display ("extend desktop to this display") when I hit apply, I get an error message stating "unable to save display settings".

Is there a solution to this where I will be able to run all 3 displays? The only thing I have not tried is using a splitter on the Mini Display port as I do not currently have access to one.

T440s w/ Lenovo SSD dying? multiple events: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

I have a nearly new T440s with Lenovo-installed SSD - in scanning the event log this morning I found 20 events (all posted yesterday at the same time) that said:

The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

I'm not sure how much to panic.

Per Device manager this drive was mfg. by Samsung and lists the ID string:

device SCSI\Disk&Ven_SAMSUNG&Prod_MZ7TE512HMHP-000\4&90e12bd&0&000000

From some earlier poking around that I did, although the drive is mfg. by Samsung the  Samsung SSD managment tool:  The latest version of the "Samsung Magician"  - V4.4 does not recognize the drive ....

(which is a Samsung PM851 - The tool does not SAY it supports the PM851 only the PM850 drives… not sure if this is the issue or not…)

http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/us/html/support/downloads.html

I can't find any similar tool for SSD maintenance / managment on the Lenovo website  :-(

(just firmware updater...)

SMART Status says:

"Uncorrectable Error Count"  and ECC Error rate are both in "FAIL" status

I'll likely open a support ticket unless one of the group here has a good suggestion?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Issue T540p Ultradock sound via HDMI & fwdphb03 not launching

My problem is that when I'm connected with the t540p to the ultradock that this sound comes from the local speakers instead of through the HDMI cable though the monitor and then through my external speaker which are way better.

In the Sound playback devices I have written: "High definietyion Audio Device Not plugged in". So I tried connecting directly via laptops mindpoit to the monitor and then it worked. But as soon as I connected it to the docking station which is also connected to the same monitor via DVI plug then it results as Not plugged in.

So I tried upgrading the dock station firmware by downloading the fwdphb03 latest firmware, and this does not launch despite being connected to the docking station and using an external monitor and properly plugged in.

Any ideas?!

Thanks

I have replaced the keyboard after seeing if there was one key which acually was depressed, but no , no key is pysical depressed or stuck so it must be a software problem.

Re: T410 battery problem

Dear Mr. Kumar,

thank you very much for the fast answer. I tried the following:

1.) Switch off laptop

2.) Take out battery, energy only by power cable

3.) Switch on

4.) Deinstall the mentioned battery driver (Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery)

5.) Switch off

6.) Disconnect power cable for a few seconds

7.) Reconnect power cable

8.) Switch on (Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery seems to be automatically reinstalled)

9.) Put in battery

10.) Disconnect cable

=> Laptop crashes, immediate black screen

Did I follow the right steps? What else might help?

Thank you very much!

Best regards

Julian

P.S. Battery status is "no activity", 100% loaded, FRU code is 42T4791.

Re: System Resolultion changes to 1024x768 unexpectedly

Hello Hermanth! Thanks for your reply, please see my notes below.

Is the issue persisting in Local Admin user?

Per company policy, all PCs are logged into with domain accounts that are not local admins. Our environment is tightly controlled, and I am unable to change this.

Have checked if the issue persists if the user is set to administrator group?

See above, I am unable to make our users a member of the administrators group.

Have you checked with updating all the Windows update, except drivers?

Windows Updates are rolled out on a controlled schedule, and all machines are on the same patch level. I am unable to arbitrarily patch individual workstations.

Please click here to get some assistance on the issue; you have to perform this on your own risk.

That was an interesting read, and the issue is similar to mine but with one key difference. This post describes an issue that is created upon a reboot, but our issue is resolved upon a reboot. We have seen this issue manifest itself in a variety of situations, but never when the computer is rebooted or first turned on. Furthermore, we have no GPOs that modify any of the referenced settings.

Please let me know what my next steps are to continue troubleshooting this issue.

Thanks,

Anthony

Re: Thoughts on the T440/s/p lineup

However, X1, X1 Carbon 1st and 2nd gen are 14 inches.

That is true. Good point. I guess it's just that the X1's 14" form is a relative newcomer to the X-series, being that it only appeared on the stage about 11 years after the first X-series machine, which I believe was the X20 back in 2000 ... so it just seems odd to liken the series with a form factor that has only been in existance for 2-3 years.

T-series are well-known for balance between performance and mobility

Again, the T series were really known for the longest time as being the 14" form factor, and then the 15" from the T42 and T42p onwards. There was never a T-series smaller than 14" and never a X-series larger than 13" ... until the X1 in 2011. When I would advise business clients a while back it was pretty clearcut .. the X were the ultraportable's with 12" - 13" screens, and the T-series was full-sized laptops with all the extra ports, optical drive etc ... very simple, and business people like simplicity!

T-series ultrabook are more mobility oriented, therefore I suggest switching to the naming convention to X

Are you talking about the T440 or T440s? Actually according to Intels definition of what an Ultrabook is are either of them technically an Ultrabook? PCworld.com says:

"An Ultrabook must now be outfitted with a touchscreen, and Intel is encouraging manufacturers to build two-in-one convertible designs (notebooks with touchscreens that detach from their keyboards to become tablets). Also, no laptop can be thicker than 23mm (0.9 inches) if it’s to be marketed as an Ultrabook, and it must now be hardware-ready for voice command and control.

Ultrabook battery-life requirements have been extended to provide at least six hours of HD video playback; a minimum of nine hours when Windows 8 is idling; and at least seven days of standby time. An Ultrabook must now wake from sleep mode in less than three seconds.

In addition to supporting wireless networking, an Ultrabook must now also support Intel’s Wireless Display technology for streaming its video output to a supported display or adapter."

Anyhow, I think the X and T series need to be redefined back to how they were when there was a X41 and a T41. Get rid of the X131e, X140 ... as well as the low-end T430u/T440 ... the T440 should be the flagship with the T440s as it's slimmer counterpart. Either that or just have the T440p for performance and T440s for slimline - no third model is needed.

My Thinkpad History since 1998: 760C, 380ED, 600X, T21, T23, T30, R30, R31, T40, T40p, R51, T41, T42, T43, T60, R61, X31, X61, T61, T400, T440p.

Re: T440s, major WiFi and Bluetooth instability

Another MAJOR problem with many recent models of Lenovo laptops is the Lenovo EMC Storage Coordinator program (I think that is it's name -- I removed it some time ago).  It periodically runs discovery.exe which results in a Denial of Service condition that locks the entire network the laptop is using -- both WLAN and LAN.

In a thread for the Yoga ThinkPad, Lenovo staff acknowledged the problem and recommended that the program be uninstalled immediately.

This serious problem deserves a broadcast alert to all owners of affected models by Lenovo, but so far only acknowledgement in one thread that I've seen.

The symptom is no Internet access for about 5 minutes or more for all computers on the network!.  Task Manager shows a high volume of outbound network traffic from discovery.exe to a large group of 169.254.xxx.xxx addresses (shown in Resource Monitor).

Re: T400 Ram Upgrade, 2x4 Gb, only beeps

Hey guys, I've got following problem.

So far I use 6 Gb (4+2) in my T400 2765-52G. The rams are from Kingston (4gb, kvr1066d3s7/4g) and Samsumg (2gb, m471b5673eh1). This works.

I need additional ram so I bought an 8gb stick from Kingston. But the Notebook only beeped (short pause short short short pause short). I realized the G45 does only support more than 4Gb for each slot. So I ordered 4Gb. First from Kingston (KVR16S11S8/4) then from Samsung (M471b5173bh0). They did not work either. Same result as above.

I removed the ac adapter + battery + bios battery, I did a bios update to 3.25 and changed the slots, tried the single module - nothing.

Do you have any ideas?

Thank you very much,

Jan

Re: T440S fan spinning ALL THE TIME!

I have had my T440s for 5 months now. However, I have been using it only for 3 months because the first 2 months were spent trying to solve other problems.

Since yesterday however, I have been consciously aware that the fan is spinning almost all the time.

I am posting this to ask if the fan spinning could be due to 1) any program I am running, or 2) an application I downloaded and tried installing yesterday (to be explained in more detail below). Actually, what I am primarily worried about is 2) as I did not know what I was doing (I am not proficient in high-level computer stuff).

Now I know that people's first reaction is that I am running programs that consume the CPU and therefore the fan has to run to cool the parts. But that is evidently not the case. I have checked my Task Manager and it shows that there are 136 processes, with CPU usage being around 5% and Physical Memory being 41%. I have also attached a screenshot of my Task Manager - I have sorted the processes according to Memory (Private Working Set), and took a screenshot of the top portion. Please take a look and let me know if anything there might explain the constant fan spinning.

Screenshot.png

However, I also did something stupid in my computer yesterday and I am not sure if that was related to the fan spinning problem that I have since become consciously aware of.  I describe here in detail what happened:

I wanted to install an electronic dictionary in my Thinkpad. I did not want to pay for it (because I already paid for a Mac version but the license key is not transferrable to Windows PC). Vaguely understanding that there are 'cracked' versions of these things on the internet, I googled for a cracked version of the said dictionary. Apparently there was an entry for this dictionary in this website called Crack Inn:

xxxxxxxxxx

So I clicked 'Download KeyGen' and downloaded a zipfolder containing the following three files:

File_ID.DIZ (DIZ File; 1 KB)
TSRh.nfo (System Information File; 3 KB)
Ultralingua.french.english.col.crack.by.TSRh.exe (Application; 1039 kb)

Not even knowing what I was getting myself into, I just clicked the third application file. What happened was that a black window (I think it was a command window) popped up. This window showed nothing but the title of the file, stayed for a few seconds and disappeared. I clicked it again and the same thing happened (and no dictionary file was intalled, by the way).

I took a look at the properties of this file and the description states that it is a "7z Setup SFX small".

So I am not sure if clicking the file and conjuring up a command window somehow "messed up" my system, which caused this constant fan spinning. I have also noticed that my cursor has since become at times sluggish. I am not sure if all this is related to the application file I downloaded (which I have since deleted completely).

Please let me know. And even if the fan spinning problem can't be related to the attempted application installation, is there any way I can un-do what I did (because running an unknown program is stupid)?

Thank you!

I don't want a touch screen on a laptop.  And now that Windows 8.1 allows you to set it up to boot directly into desktop mode I'm leaving Windows 7 and my HP ultrabook for my little stubby Lenovo friend.   I almost went back to a MacBook Air.

Anyway, I hope you are lestining out there Lenovo.   People who buy ThinkPads are not looking for a fashison statement, now you even have a ThinkPad Yoga,  I mean what the hell is that.

What has made Apple so suscessful are their base who keeps coming back.  Your ThinkPad is what their Mac is.   If you lose that loyal following you'll simply drive that base away, that base that has the money to afford a ThinkPad much like that base who can afford a Mac Pro.

You can cater to the Starbuck hispster gender confused crowd and still maintain that conservative traditionalist notion, which is the ThinkPad.  And might I say most buy a ThinkPad because it is conservative and built upon tradiction.   There are some things in life that should never be changed just for thr sake of change.  It generally leads to dissatisfaction.

Re: T440s losing wifi connection

Yes, I certainly agree that the wifi is much, much, much  better now, with the new driver 17.0.2. Yesterday I had a flawless day, with no connection drops whatsoever, perfect.  Today is going well, too. However, I have had two wifi drops today, when I have been multi-tasking with google and a word document, going back and forth.  After I have been on Word for about a half-hour straight, and then switched back to google, or  when I have simply let the machine sit idle for about 20 minutes, I found the connection was dropped. This has happened twice today.... Anyway, Lenovo, thanks very much for the 17.0.2 driver -- a great help.  But please keep on going, to iron out the remaining glitches.

Re: Watch 3D Blu-ray torrent with Lenovo T430

I have a 3D projector and 3D-compatible receiver in my home theater room. I recently purchased a Lenovo T430, and was wondering if it is possible to watch downloaded 3D movie torrents with this laptop.

I understand that I need a mini displayport --> HDMI cable to connect the laptop to the receiver. I also understand that these torrent files play through something such as the MKV player in side-by-side format.

I do NOT know that if I purchase this adapter, will the 3D files be able to play in 3D through my theater setup? It seems like a "why wouldn't they?" situation, but I am not too tech-savvy and don't know if I am missing something.

Re: T410i missing graphc device selection in BIOS after repair

Hello everybody,

my Thinkpad t410i had an overheating problem so I gave it to a certified Lenovo store and they changed the mainboard.

After the replacement I am facing now two new problems:

1. The graphic device selection in BIOS/Config/Display is missing. BIOS version is the newest (1.45)

2. Both OS (Ubuntu 13.10 and Windows 7) have Problems with the graphic

   - Windows does not recognize external monitors via VGA anymore

   - Linux crashes at moving windows with the nouveau driver and the proprietary driver also makes problems.

Does a hardware replacement has an effect on running os and could require a new os install?

When is the graphic device selection in BIOS/Config/Display available and when not? Why is it missing now?

Any way to fix this?

Do you need more info?

Thanks a lot  for your help

Re: T440s - LG or AUO Display

Got my T440s (FHD non-touch) yesterday, it has that freaking LG screen. It's actually worse than a very bad TN panel on my 5 year old asus. It thought there were no worse screens out there. How can they even claim that's an IPS?! It always has this dark horizontal line spanning about 1/3 of the screen (i'd say 20-30% darker than the upper and lower edges), there is exactly 1 position where you can kind of be ok with the picture.

Another issue with this panel, which others have not mentioned here is actually color reproductoin. During win8 initial configuration you are asked to choose a color. I chose violet and the screen has three visible vertical swaths where the color shift towards blue from violet.

The touchpad won't register right-click in the upper right zone, so trackpoint is unusable.

I don't what to do now, try replacing the screen or ask for a refund and just forget about lenovo. It's definitely not what I paid for.

Re: T420 keeps powering off after drying from spilled tea

Hi Ami,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I’m sorry to hear that you spilled tea on your Lenovo ThinkPad T420 and the system keeps shutting down on its own.

I would suggest you to perform Flee Power – remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect the AC Adapter and battery and try to turn ON the computer.

Abrupt shutdowns normally occur due to overheating issue as chances of dust getting accumulated are high. First of all, I would suggest you to ensure that air vents are not blocked and there is a proper air flow. Also, check the speeds at which the fan is spinning. Start using compatible cooling pads which will help in the flow of cool air into the underside vents of the laptop.

Please refer the hardware maintenance manual which will shows you how to take perform disassembly of the system and where the components are located.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Mithun.

Hi all,

I bought a T440P laptop with 256GB Solid State HDD. I am already out of space. how can add a secondary hard disk to the machine? I want this in addition to my existing drive. I am thinking of buying "HGST Travelstar 2.5-Inch 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache Internal Hard Drive".Will this fit in my laptop? and are there any instructions available to add it?

Thanks,

I'm getting an exclamation mark on the task bar that leads me to the Lenovo Solution Center, where I get the message noted in the subject line.

The buttons take me to the Device Manager.

I've browsed the Device Manager and looked at all of the listed devices and I do not see an error flag. What do I need to do to install the wayward driver or otherwise clear the error message?

Thanks in advance,

So as it turns out it's not that easy to get your keyboard fixed. I posted a message yesterday here and everyone was sure that it is covered by warranty and I can get a replacement keyboard. I've contacted the local Lenovo representatives and explained them my issue - A pin on the Z key is broken and the key constantly flips open when I type on the keyboard. The computer is 1 month old and used only on a desk. I haven't applied any pressure that can damage the keyboard, nor I dropped anything on it. It clearly is a defect. They told me that if it is a mechanical issue - e.g. broken pin - it is not covered by warranty so there's nothing I can do but to purchase a new keyboard. They also told me that for every issue I have to send the whole computer to the service. I don't have problem sending it if it is a motherboard or screen issue but I'm not sure it's normal to ask me to send it for such an issue related to a user replacable part. I am using this computer all day for work and I can't afford not to have it for more than a few hours.

I really require help on that from someone who perhaps works for Lenovo. I am ready to provide all the information needed including pictures, serial number, etc.

Thank you all in advance. I hope this gets resolved soon.

T540p with UltraDock USB Problems

I recently got this Thinkpad T540p, and all is well but the USB port on my dockingstation. I can't get them to work, the USB port on the pc works fine, but if I try to use one of the USB port on the dockingstation, it won't work. I'm ussing an Thinkpad Ultra Dock.

I'm running on Windows 7 Professional, service pack 1. I have tried to upgrade the Docks hardware as suggested in another thread, but that didn't do the trick.

Any ideas og suggestions is much appreciated.

Re: T540p/T440p+UltraDock+external display issues

@Mark_Lenovo,

have Ultra Dock (P/N: 40A20090EU) and a X240 (P/N: 20AM-S05C00). After weeks of waiting for a non-windows-solution I have installed temporarily windows7.

Applying the firmware patch with 'fwdphb01.exe' like described here does not work for me.

Error message from 'Prius Tool':

"Faild to find Synaptics MST DP hub IC"

I have to work with this notebook! So please find a solution for this annoying buggy firmware.

Re: T440s: Disk Password cannot be set in Bios

thecaptcrunch

I will send it to you in a bit.

The Lenovo crypto erase tool is only for ATA Security Erase.  If the drive is in OPAL or eDrive mode, then the ATA Security commands don't work.  It's the same reason why you can't set HDD password.

Re: T440s speaker noise

That's terrible. I hope they will do sth about it, because I wanna buy (or maybe I'm considering..) T440s during March.
And I can change my decision and buy sth cheaper or buy Macbook Pro or Air..

If this is only software issue, hopefully they will fix it, but if this is a hardware issue... (?)

Re: Add hard disk to T440P

Thanks,

dk

Re: Went from T440s to T410 - Happier!

This is not a question. I just felt like sharing my story so that someone possibly could benefit from my experience.

I'm a long time Lenovo user, a fanboy even, been using T-series since when it was IBM. Having made due with an X220 at work and a MacBook Air 13" at home I thought I'd take the plunge and buy the T440s when it came out late last year (2013).

Said and done.

Already from the get go, upon recieving it I could tell that this was not good. The keyboard was bad, the new trackpad worse, and the screen was bleeding + I thought I could handle a 1920x1080 resolution but I couldn't. The resolution gaffe is mine and not anybody else's fault. There was also (still is) problems with wifi-connection dropping every hour or so. Unbelievably bad.

Also, an intagible but still, the build quality, the feel if you will, is really off. I've come to expect more from Lenovo. Also the "pioneering feeling" of owning a computer that is very extendable and also maintainable should you ever have a problem like dead pixels or faulty buttons on your keyboard, is now gone.

So, what did I do? Well, I thought back to what Lenovo I last appreciated toally and without a "Yes, I like it but....", and that's the T410. So I ordered a refurbished 1440x900 (yes, 16:10 rules!!!) and got it for 1/5th of the price of my T440s and I'm totally loving it. THIS is what a computer should feel like.

So, if you are about to purchase a new Lenovo. Think again. Go to a serious refurb dealer and get yourself a T410. I guess T420 works OK but I'm not a fan of the 16:9. Stay away from T430 and T440. I guess if you can stomach the keyboard of the T430 you at least still have the trackpad WITH the keys. Without them, as is the case on all new lenovos worth your time, you are really lost.

Hopefully this helps someone in chosing their system.

Sincerely,

Jeremy

PS. You might wonder what I've done with the T440s? Keeping it docked, using it with external keyboard, mouse, and screen as a desktop. Works OK.

T430 W7Pro: Solution center message says I am missing driver "qknfd"

I'm getting an exclamation mark on the task bar that leads me to the Lenovo Solution Center, where I get the message noted in the subject line.

The buttons take me to the Device Manager.

I've browsed the Device Manager and looked at all of the listed devices and I do not see an error flag. What do I need to do to install the wayward driver or otherwise clear the error message?

Thanks in advance,

Rick
